   Scholarships and awards totaling $93,350 were presented to local students on Tuesday, June 16, during the 2009 LaPorte Regional Health System Scholarship and Awards Program at LaPorte Hospital.

   LaPorte Regional Health System (LRHS), the LaPorte Hospital Foundation and La Porte Hospital Auxiliary have sponsored financial scholarships and award/loan programs for students pursuing or considering careers in health science and health care occupations since 1982.

  LRHS provided $47,100 to area students pursuing health careers in fields considered to be in critical need in the health care industry. In addition, the LaPorte Hospital Foundation awarded $32,000, and the LaPorte Hospital Auxiliary awarded $14,250 in scholarships to area students pursuing health-related educations.

   Here are the recipients:

   Critical Occupations Award/Loan Program — Kara Butcher, Goshen College, Bachelor of Nursing; Kristina Havens, Valparaiso University, Bachelor of Nursing; and Nikole Pennington, Purdue North Central, Bachelor of Nursing.

   Dr. Robert W. Kepler Memorial Award (for a medical student) — Abigail M. Prast, Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine, pediatric medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine.

   Dr. John E. and Lillian R. Magnuson Scholarships (for LRHS employees advancing their degrees) — Sandra R. Behrens, Columbia Southern, Master in Health Care Management; Tracy E. Blanton, Valparaiso University, Doctorate in Nursing Practice; Tracy A.
