The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) is pleased to announce that the Lake Michigan District, which includes LaPorte, Lake and Porter counties, was awarded SWANA’S Silver Excellence in Solid Waste Management Award in Special Waste category.
The Lake Michigan District earned the award through the success of its Household Hazardous Waste Mobile Collection program, which is established in the LaPorte County, Lake County and Porter County solid waste districts.
“SWANA is pleased to honor the Lake Michigan District for the outstanding accomplishments it has achieved. Their commitment to advancing solid waste management is outstanding and we are very proud of their efforts,” said John Skinner, SWANA’s executive director and CEO.
“One can only imagine how it feels to be recognized by SWANA, a national association,” said Tom Buford, coordinator of the Lake Michigan District household hazardous waste program. “Those associated with our program think it’s a successful program — it’s so nice when a professional association confirms our belief.”
SWANA recognizes outstanding solid waste programs and facilities that promote socially, environmentally and economically sound management of solid waste. Award winners demonstrate their commitment to environmental regulation compliance, program efficiency, safety and progress.
Since 1994, the Lake Michigan District has provided a regional response to the environmental hazards posed by household chemicals to the citizens of LaPorte, Lake and Porter counties as well as seven southern counties in Indiana through a safe, convenient and affordable collection system.
