Purdue North Central Chancellor Dr. James B. Dworkin has announced the winners of the 2009-2010 Chancellor’s Leadership Award. The students selected for the honor join a distinguished group of students who have a record of academic achievement and demonstrated leadership through involvement in school and community activities.

   Award criteria include school and community involvement and leadership, scholastic achievement, and potential for participation and leadership in PNC extracurricular activities. Students earning leadership awards represent high schools throughout northwest Indiana and were involved in a variety of clubs, activities, community and church organizations and sports.

   The Chancellor’s Leadership Award is a renewable scholarship program that requires participation in an on-campus leadership seminar and volunteer service, among other requirements. Several of the scholarships are sponsored through endowment funds created by local businesses and individuals.

   LaPorte County-area students earning the awards are:

Lindsay Applegate - A graduate of Michigan City High School, she was captain of the tennis team and qualified for regionals in her senior year. She also worked at tennis camps and gave lessons and volunteered at St. John’s Church nursing home.

Jamie Bostic -A graduate of John Glenn High School, she was captain of the golf team and played basketball and softball. She was a member of S.A.D.D, Spanish Club, National Honor Society and North Liberty Youth League. She participated in the Walk for Hospice, D.A.R.E., Potato Creek State Park Clean-up, was a Spell Bowl volunteer, food drive volunteer and did peer tutoring and road clean-up.

Kayla Mrozinske – A current PNC student, she is a staff writer for “The Voice” and a fall 2008 participant in the Chancellor’s Leadership Group seminar. A LaPorte High School graduate, she was a member of the pom and dance squad and girls reserves while volunteering for the American Red Cross and as a middle school dance teacher.

Taylor Rodriguez – A Michigan City High School graduate, she was a member of Science Club, Japanese Club, Drama Club, National Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society – Japanese, Wind Ensemble Band, and Ping Pong Club. In the community she volunteered with the Labor Dayz/Summer Fest, Michigan City Senior Center, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Barker Mansion and Oktoberfest.

Samantha Walbright – A South Central High School graduate, she was a member of Spanish Club, Yearbook Club, Leo Club, National Honor Society and was a football manager, bat girl manager and track manager. She was involved at the LaPorte YMCA, is a babysitter and participated in Great Strides.

Shelby Zarobinski – As a New Prairie High School graduate, her high school activities included robotics, track and field, Future Business Leaders of America, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Student Senate, Cougar Congress and Academic Superbowl. She is active with 4-H Wagon Masters, Hudson Hustlin Helpers, Relay for Life, Democratic Headquarters, Lions Club, Elementary PTO, food banks, and March of Dimes.
