Joseph C. Nickels, 77, of LaPorte, died at 2:05 p.m. Friday, Dec. 11, 2009, at Lady of Peace Hospital in Mishawaka, IN.

   He was born April 4, 1932, in LaPorte to Christian J. and Mabal (Fitting) Nickels, both of whom preceded him in death.

   Mr. Nickels was an electrician and home builder for over 40 years until his retirement. He wired and built many homes and business firms, including a major truck wash in Gary as well as residences from Beverly Shores to Kingsbury. In addition, he freely devoted his time to helping out homeowners and widows who were without resources to improve their property. He also originated several inventions, including the Auto-Popcorn popper that was marketed by the Mennen Co. in the 1970s. He was a member of the Ambassador Club of the LaPorte Hospital Foundation and was a donor to the Indiana State Trooper Trust Relief Fund, among many other charities. He originated a family charitable fund through The Unity Foundation of LaPorte County. Joseph will be missed by his family and many friends.

   Surviving are two sisters, Cathleen M. Finley of San Antonio, TX, and Ann J. Nickels of LaPorte; two brothers, Robert C. Nickels, M.D., of Heartford, WI, and Jerome H. Nickels of LaPorte; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

   Besides his parents, Joseph was preceded in death by two brothers, James R. Nickels and William C. Nickels.

   There will be no services. Cremation has taken place. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte, handled arrangements.
