The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and Governor’s Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving has named LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office Captain John Boyd as the North Central Region Coordinator of the Year for 2009.

Boyd was presented the award at the annual law enforcement banquet hosted by the Institute and Governors Council.

“Our agency is proud of the job that Captain Boyd does in the Task Force,” said Sheriff Mike Mollenhauer. “Captain Boyd works hard to coordinate the program and this award is well-deserved.”

During fiscal year 2009, Boyd managed a federal grant that specifically targets impaired driving enforcement. He maintained yearlong enforcement schedules, media reporting, as well as monthly and quarterly data reporting. This assignment is in addition to his regular daily duties as chief of detectives for the sheriff’s office.

“Captain Boyd was selected from 35 officers across the North Central Region,” said Phil Oliver, law enforcement liaison for the North Central Region. “His dedication to the program, as well as his management skills, have made this program a benefit to the citizens of LaPorte County. Congratulations to Captain John Boyd for this much deserved award.”

The LaPorte County DUI Task Force consists of deputies and officers from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, the LaPorte City Police Department and the Michigan City Police Department. The task force provides extra traffic patrols targeting impaired drivers.

The Governor’s Council on Impaired & Dangerous Driving serves as the public opinion catalyst and the implementing body for statewide action to reduce death and injury on Indiana roadways. The council provides grant funding, training, coordination and ongoing support to state and local traffic safety advocates.
