Bennie Zarr   Bennie Zarr, 87, of LaPorte, died at 5:20 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, 2010, at Miller’s Merry Manor, New Carlisle.

   He was born Sept. 25, 1922, in LaPorte to Walter and Pearl (Morris) Zarr, both of whom preceded him in death.

   Bennie was also preceded in death by his son Alan Zarr, brother Harold “Bud” Zarr and sister Lillian Powell.

   Mr. Zarr worked for 25 years for Scott Foresman, LaPorte, until his retirement in 1981. Bennie was honorably discharged from the United States Navy after serving during World War II. He enjoyed golf, football, bowling and boxing. As a lifelong resident, Bennie managed LaPorte city boxing for seven years out of the Civic Auditorium and Michigan City area.

   On Oct. 19, 1940, in Michigan City, IN, he married Kathryn Hynek, who survives.

   Also surviving are four children, Dick (Sharon) Zarr of St. George, UT, Pat (David) Wellinski of LaPorte, Harold (Carole) Zarr of Phoenix, AZ, and Nancy (Bruce) Terman of Edwardsburg, MI; four sisters, Vera Cruzat of Washington state, Irene White of California, Mary Jane Taylor of Arizona and Betty Kirkham of LaPorte; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

   A visitation celebrating his life will be held Saturday, Jan. 9, from 10 a.m. to noon at Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, LaPorte.

   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s choice.
