The intersection of East Lincolnway and Boyd Boulevard (shown here in an image from Google Earth) was the city intersection where the highest number of crashes occurred in 2009.
The LaPorte Police Department has identified the most dangerous city intersections for crashes in 2009.
The most dangerous intersections in the city of LaPorte for 2009 were:
– East Lincolnway and Boyd Boulevard with 18 crashes.
– Lincolnway and Tipton Street with 11 crashes.
– Lincolnway and Madison Street with eight crashes.
– U.S. 35 North and State Road 39 North with six crashes.
– State Road 2 West and Andrew Avenue with six crashes.
– Lincolnway and Chicago Street with six crashes.
– Lincolnway and Monroe Street; Boyd Boulevard and Ohio Street; U.S. 35 and Boyd Boulevard; Monroe Street and Edgewood Lane; and Lincolnway and Monroe Street, with five crashes each.
Number of crashes down in December
LaPorte Police investigated 52 property damage and 12 personal injury crashes in December 2009, down dramatically from the 92 crashes that the department investigated in December 2008. This probably can be partially attributed to the better weather conditions during most of December 2009, according to a department press release.
Of those crashes, two of the property damage crashes and two of the personal injury crashes were alcohol-related.
The LaPorte Police Department arrested 16 adults and one juvenile for operating while intoxicated in December.
January traffic safety plans
In January, city police will be running 30 hours of Big City/County (BCC) traffic safety details and 50 hours of Fatality Crash Reduction Effort (FCRE) details. They will also conduct impaired driving patrols on most weekends in January.
BCC, which targets seat belt and child restraint violations; FCRE, which targets dangerous moving violations that cause serious and fatal crashes; and DUI: Taskforce Indiana, which targets impaired driving, are funded through federal grants administered by the Governor’s Council on Impaired and Dangerous Driving and the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.
More information regarding the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute can be found at http://www.in.gov/cji. The LaPorte Police Department’s website is www.lpcitypd.com.
