LaPortean Leah Johnson, 25, was killed in an accident Friday morning, Jan. 8, 2010, in North Judson, IN.
Starke County Police said Leah, who worked at Bank of Indiana in North Judson, was traveling south on Ind. 39 south of Toto Road in North Judson, when her 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt slid sideways on the snow-covered road and struck another vehicle.
The second vehicle was a 2000 Ford Taurus driven by Nicholas Stoddard, 19, of Kewanna, IN. He and two passengers in his car complained of pain but did not appear to be seriously injured.
Leah had to be extricated from her car, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene. Starke County Coroner Chris Rannells said she died of a fractured cervical spine.
Leah was a 2003 LaPorte High School honors graduate and a 2007 honors graduate of Ball State University. She played soccer at LPHS and was a 10-year 4-Her. Among survivors are her husband of one year, Derek Johnson; their son, Jeffrey Madsen Johnson; her mother, Christine Ribordy of LaPorte; and her brother, Nicholas Ribordy of West Lafayette.
