EDITOR’S NOTE: On Jan. 6, 2010, WNLP visited a LaPorte Community Schools fourth-grade class to talk about our website. The kids asked us questions and reported on our visit. Here are some of those young reporters’ news stories.
The time “What’s New, LaPorte?” came to my class
By Danielle Lee Walsh
It was a typical day in Wahlstromland. We were doing morning work, reading, and being angels as usual. Then Mrs. Wahlstrom informed us that Mrs. Bernel and Ms. Boardman were coming to talk to us about writing for their online news site. (It’s not a newspaper because there’s no paper!)
It’s called “What’s New, LaPorte?,” WNLP for short. When they came we each got to ask them one question about the news site. It was interesting. They told us all about the news site and how to send them things for the site. We wrote down everything they said, like actual reporters! Mrs. W said we were very good listeners and asked reasonable questions.
It’s so cool because the Wahlstromites were chosen to write for the website! They said we must have permission from our parents for our names and pictures to be put on the site because many people look at the site every day!
There are many categories to write about, like business, sports, local news, editorial opinions, entertainment, features, and art and photography.
Mrs. W, the school and my parents have to say it’s OK to put stuff on the site. Some of us will get our work put on the site.
The site has been open for about 11 months. Their site’s web address is www.whatsnewlaporte.com.
Mrs. Bernel and Ms. Boardman have interviewed both famous and ordinary people. They said their jobs are fun and exciting because you never know what exciting or cool stories or pictures you will get.

WNLP’s visit!
By Grace Siefker
On January 6, 2010, our classroom got a visit from some special people. It was WNLP (”What’s New, LaPorte?”) Mrs. Bernel and Ms. Boardman are the founder and editor of this online news site. They were here to tell their new recruits about their job. The kids had 20 questions for them; here are a few:
— Did you ever interview anyone famous?
Dan Quayle
Richard Nixon
Mike Singletary
— How are different types of reporters alike and different?
Reporters-collect facts
Columnists-give opinion
Journalists–might do both
— About how many stories do you have in a year?
They got about 5,000 stories in a year!
They inspired me with their info. I want to have a job just like them.

The special day

On January 6, 2010, Room 206, better known as Wahlstromland, got a special visit from two very special people, Mrs. Bernel and Ms. Boardman. They were there to tell us about their jobs and what they do. Mrs. Bernel and Ms. Boardman both work for the same Internet site, “What’s New, LaPorte?” It is kind of like a newspaper.
Mrs. Bernel is the publisher of WNLP. A publisher manages the website and does things like making sure what they are putting on the website is legal, and they are not putting any false information on it either. Ms. Boardman is the managing editor. She thinks her job is exciting because she does not know what surprise stories and pictures people might have sent her. She has to constantly check her e-mail to check for information she needs to put on the website.
“What’s New, LaPorte?” has been on the Internet for 11 months and already had over 5,000 stories and articles. They even had classified information, but they could not put it out until they knew it was true. They told the class that it was not always easy to come up with ideas to write about and that it was much easier when you are given something to write about. I think they are very fascinating, and I might want to be like them some day.

“What’s New, LaPorte?”

On January 6, 2010, we had two important people come in to our classroom whose names are Kathy Bernel and Beth Boardman. They work for the website “What’s New, LaPorte?” They came in to tell us about the website.
They told us that people send them pictures and stories of all kinds of different things about LaPorte. They showed us different things on the website. They can even put dogs on the website that need homes so people can adopt them.
We asked them a lot of questions, like a 20 questions game. They took pictures of the class, and they even took a picture of my friends and me holding our school project (a poster on Amelia Earhart).
I think that they have a good job. They both said they like their job, too. They told us that they had about 5,000 articles or postings on the website in just 11 months.
I think they have an awesome job, and I would like to have a job like that. I have to thank them so much for coming in.

These nice, intelligent ladies named Mrs. Bernel and Ms. Boardman came to my classroom. They came to interview us. We also interviewed them. They have an online news site. It is called “What’s New, LaPorte?” They publish things that happen all around LaPorte. For example: Pretend there was a car crash. They would get information and maybe a photo of the car crash.
They have many, many people visit their website every day and they would like more. So when you have time, go on the Internet and go to www.whatsnewlaporte.com.

Mrs. Bernel is a publisher and Ms. Boardman is the managing editor for “What’s New, LaPorte?” or WNLP. They were at our school for an interview with Room 206. They came at 11 a.m. on Jan. 6, 2010, and the class was very excited.
The class asked some questions, and they answered, of course. The class learned that their job can be hard but still fun. Ms. Boardman and Mrs. Bernel love when people send in stories about different things and pictures, too. The class learned a lot about them and their jobs.
Well, I’ll be back with more info but for now I’ve got to go. Oh, and remember to visit their website at www.whatsnewlaporte.com.

The Special Day
By Kaleb Worlds
It was a very special Wednesday on Jan. 6, 2010, because two special people, Mrs. Bernel and Ms. Boardman, came to talk to us about their jobs. Their job is to tell you some of the news. The name of their website is called “What’s New, LaPorte?” This job is sometimes easy but sometimes hard, because once in awhile people they interview or post articles about are hurt inside because somebody they love died or got hurt.
These people work 4 to 8 hours a day. They have interviewed a few famous people like two presidents, an actor, and a famous football player. These people inspired me by telling how special this job is.

Jan. 6, 2010, Beth Boardman and Kathy Bernel came to our classroom, and our class interviewed them. They work at “What’s New, LaPorte?” Here are some of the things we discussed …
They told us what columnists do. They write about their thoughts and opinions. A reporter writes about facts, and a journalist might write about either opinions or facts. They also told us about their job and what it was like. Kathy told us that it was her favorite job of her whole life. Someone asked if their job was hard. They responded sometimes, and when they asked questions, sometimes people would not answer the question.
We asked if they liked their job. They said they loved it. They told us that they have interviewed famous people. They interviewed Vice President Dan Quayle, a French actor, Richard Nixon, and a player from the Chicago Bears, Mike Singletary. Someone asked how much time they spent on their work. They answered it depended on their work. They said probably four to eight hours a day.
Maddie, Elise, Sarah and I made an Amelia Earhart poster, and Beth Boardman took a picture of our poster.
They work at WNLP. I bet I’ll have fun writing for them!

On Jan. 6, 2010, Mrs.Bernel and Ms. Boardman of the “What’s New, LaPorte?” online newspaper came to our school. We interviewed them and wanted to share it with you.
Reporters, journalists, and columnists are different because reporters write facts, columnists write thoughts, and journalists write facts and thoughts. While working for the newspaper you learn and meet many new people. When you walk in you never know what might happen. You get little money for your job. Their jobs are usually very hard, but they think their jobs are wonderful.
They have interviewed famous people like Dan Quayle, President Richard Nixon, and a French actor visiting LaPorte. They don’t really travel for their jobs much. They research a lot for their stories. A bunch of planning goes into being a reporter. They post over 5,000 stories a year on their site. News agencies are very busy all the time.
We had a good time interviewing them. It was fun.
