Winter blues got you feeling down? It’s that time of the year when the smell of suntan lotion and a warm, sandy beach really sound great right about now.
Whenever my husband and I talk about heading somewhere, the question always arises as to what to do with the animals. He always feels they hinder us from traveling often, and then I remind him that my job plays a role in that, too!
Our pet situation requires a pet sitter to come to our house, rather than just sending Gus and the cats to a boarding kennel. I have not been fortunate to find any donkey-friendly kennels just yet …

Follow guidelines to find a good pet sitter so that you -- and your pets -- can relax while you're gone.
Here are a few tips for finding the right pet sitter:
1. A professional pet sitter should be licensed and bonded. Ask for documentation.
2. Ask for local references and call them.
3. Many sitters will have a standard contract with services offered and associated fees.
4. An introductory meeting is always best prior to leaving.
5. Make sure arrangements are made if your veterinarian is not available in an emergency.
6. A responsible pet sitter should have a backup in case of illness or an emergency.
Pet-sitting rates can vary depending on the number of visits, tasks performed, etc. Pet sitters can be a pet’s best companion in its owner’s absence, not to mention knowing your pet is comfortable in its own environment. Having a pet sitter also means someone is checking on your home and making sure everything is A-OK!
So call your travel agent and get those vacation plans in gear. Rest assured your pet will be well cared for at home with a qualified pet sitter.
Paws till next time … Jane
