The LaPorte County Solid Waste District offers these reminders to make recycling more successful during the winter months:

   1. Toters must be at curbside by 6 a.m. on the day of pickup.

   2. Toters must be as close as possible to the curb so that the automated arm on the truck can reach them over the snow piles.

   3. Nothing should be on top of the toter. Place additional recycling on the side of the toter.

   4. Boxes should be broken down to fit inside the toter.

   5. Toters should be at least 5 feet away from mailboxes, telephone poles, fences or any other object to allow the automated arm to operate freely.

   6. Only acceptable items collected should be left curbside. Special items need to be taken to special collections or sites designated for that specific item. For a list of special collection dates or sites, call the SWD office at 219-326-0014 or 800-483-7700, check its website at www.solidwastedistrict.com, or follow this link to the WNLP list of collections: http://www.whatsnewlaporte.com/2010/01/25/here-are-household-hazardous-waste-tire-appliance-book-collections-for-2010/

   7. All recycling trucks are equipped with a GPS device so that the road supervisor is able to pinpoint the collection time in your area. If you think you have been missed and your recycling was out on time, please call the office within 24 hours for a pickup. The truck will not return if the call is made more than 24 hours after pickup.

If we work together, the recycling program will be more successful than ever before. In 2008, 6,599 tons of recyclables were collected; in 2009 the total was 8,480 tons. Just imagine what the 2010 total might be!
