La Lumiere’s Academic Decathlon team placed third overall and first in the small school division at the state regional competition held at Kankakee Valley High School in Wheatfield, IN, on Jan. 23. The Lakers will compete in the 25th annual Indiana Academic Decathlon State Finals on Feb. 12 and 13 at Purdue University.
In the Honors Division, the following students won awards:
— Cody Steinhiser, Michigan City – first in math and music, second in science and literature, third in essay and speech, third overall;
— Conor Luck, LaPorte – second in math and economics, third in science and literature;
— Matt Babcock, Michigan City – third in math.
In the Scholastic Division, the following students won awards:
— Won Kun (Scott) Lee, Korea – first in interview and math, third in music;
— Justin Katz, Beverly Shores – first in science, third in literature and tied for third in art;
— Hillary Zawada, LaPorte – tied for third in art.
In the Varsity Division:
— Emma Keiley of LaPorte won first in interview, second in essay, third in speech and math and second overall.
Administered by the Indiana Association of School Principals and funded by Purdue University, the decathlon features teams of students who compete through tests, essays, speeches and interviews to advance to the United States Academic Decathlon National Championship. The competition is made up of 10 events with objective tests in seven areas (language/literature, math, science, economics, fine arts, music, and history) as well as speech, interview, and essay.
The theme for this year’s competition is the French Revolution.
Teams consist of up to 12 members with three being designated as Honors (3.75-4.00), three Scholastic (3.00-3.74), and three Varsity (0-2.99) with three alternates. Each student participates in all 10 events.
