The LaPorte City Police Department is warning residents of a scam that targeted an elderly LaPorte couple on Monday, Feb. 8, 2010.
In the early afternoon hours on the city’s west side, a Hispanic male came to the couple’s door and advised that he was hired to cut some trees for the City of LaPorte. When the resident asked for an ID, the male flashed some sort of card that could not be clearly seen. The male walked the male resident to his backyard and pointed out some trees in question. As this was being done, the male resident saw a second Hispanic male walking his wife to the backyard pointing out other trees.
As they walked back into their residence they saw a third Hispanic male exiting their bedroom. They at first thought nothing was missing, however when they checked later they discovered some money was missing from the female’s purse.
The three males were seen leaving in a gray or tan Jeep Cherokee, van or station wagon.
If anyone has information concerning these suspects, please contact the LaPorte City Police Department at 362-9446.
If anyone is approached by someone claiming to work for the city, do not let them in your house and call to verify who they are if they are not willing to show or are not wearing any identification.

It’s such a shame how people like this take advantage of the elderly. If they want money they need to get out and work for it like the rest of us do.

So many people in La Porte dislike and distrust Hispanic people. An incident like this one only reinforces negative stereotypes and fear, especially among older folks.
