By Danielle Walsh, LaPorte Community Schools fourth grader

Have you ever been in a club? Well, through LaPorte Hospital I participate in a club called Lil’ Fish. FISH means “Feel Important … Stay Healthy!”

In this club, they tell you how to stay healthy and the rights and wrongs of health. All local fourth graders get to attend. If you think health is boring, they make learning fun! There are very nice volunteers who go from school to school. Lil’ Fish meets once a month towards the end of the month.

Some of the things we have learned in Lil’ Fish Club cover nutrition, self-esteem, avoiding drugs, growing up, and healthy habits. They always say smoking and drugs are the worst things you can do to your body. They are the worst because in a cigarette or cigar, there are over 4,000 chemicals! Also, it will take your money and maybe your life!

At the nutrition meeting we learned a song called “5 a Day.” It goes: “5 a day … 5 a day … that’s the fruit and vegetable way!” Did you know you should not eat junk food, or at the most eat only one serving of junk food a day? Also, remember it’s best to eat wheat. Carbohydrates are considered brain food!

At the self-esteem meeting we were taught we will be facing many changes soon. We learned puberty starts in girls 8 through 13 and in boys 10 through 15. We learned we should shower once a day, brush our hair and teeth at least twice a day, CHANGE UNDERWEAR DAILY! And DON’T SQUEEZE ZITS!

Always remember — stay happy and stay healthy!
