LaPorte High School Senior Maggie Vanes has been playing on the varsity volleyball team since she was a sophomore. Her favorite part of competing is when everyone is respecting the rules and being treated equally.

But she’s not focused on just volleyball. Vanes also participates in GR, Spanish Club, Rotary Club and PSI. She is also a staff member of the school yearbook, El Pe.

As a senior, Vanes has much to anticipate for her future.

“I’m looking forward to all of the senior festivities. Also, college and everything after,” said Vanes.

And while this year is sure to be one she will always remember, she says that summertime has always been the source of some of her fondest memories.

When looking back on her accomplishments, Vanes sees the change and growth she has had in high school as the most fulfilling, but admits she has even more goals for after high school.

“Go to college, meet new people, experience new things and learn more,” said Vanes.

Her list of hobbies includes music, friends, family, traveling, learning and writing.

Vanes’ favorite meal is meatloaf, and she would choose Zooey Deschanel, who played Kit in the movie “Failure to Launch,” to play her if her life was ever made into a movie.

Vanes draws inspiration from the quote: “He that would live in peace and at ease must not speak all he knows or all he sees.”

Morgan Dearing

Morgan Dearing

Junior Morgan Dearing is a runner for both cross country and track at LaPorte High School. Competitive running is his favorite activity because of the excitement of receiving a medal for winning a race or doing his best, and helping out the team.

Major accomplishments and memories that Dearing has from his sport include running on varsity since he was a freshman, running on the state team in 2008, and being a part of the team in 2007 when they were runners-up at state with Mike Fout.

Sports also play a factor in Dearing’s hopes for after graduation.

“My goals are graduating and maybe getting a scholarship for cross country,” said Dearing. “I plan to go to a four-year college.”

But besides sports, Dearing also puts a major emphasis on his schoolwork. He sets personal goals for himself and feels accomplished to have maintained decent grades in high school.

Dearing also sets time aside to just relax and pursue his other hobbies, which include listening to music, watching movies or TV, spending time with friends and going to the beach or out to eat.

“I’m a likeable guy. I can be funny at times, too. I like to be active all the time,” said Dearing.

Dearing lives by the mottos “Go big or go home” and “Always do your best,” and would choose Vince Vaughn to play him in a movie about his life.
