Mrs. Doris May Cyr, 83, of LaPorte, died at 8:45 a.m. on Monday, March 8, 2010, at Golden Living Center/Fountainview Terrace Nursing Home, LaPorte.

   She was born July 20, 1926, to Frank and Lucinda (Thompson) Schreiber.

   Mrs. Cyr worked as a waitress and manager for approximately 25 years. She loved to sew clothing and enjoyed knitting, reading, traveling, gardening and helping others. She was instrumental in starting a special school for the handicapped during Govenor Handley’s administration in the 1950s. She was a member of Lambs Chapel United Methodist Church.

   She leaves behind one son, George Cyr of LaPorte; one sister, Grace (Dennis) Goers of LaPorte; and 10 nieces and nephews.

   She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter Paula Cyr; two sisters, Ruth Schreiber and Marian Lowe; and one brother, Frank Schreiber Jr.

   A funeral service will be held Thursday, March 11, at 1 p.m. at Essling Funeral Home, LaPorte, with Pastor Lynn Breeden officiating. Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 10, from 4 to 7 p.m., and Thursday from noon to 1 p.m.
