   A new officer officially joined the ranks of the LaPorte City Police Department on Monday, March 15, 2010.

   Joshua Sponaugle, 25, was sworn in by city police Chief Terry Scherer at the police station.

   Sponaugle’s hiring was possible through a federal COPS grant, which covers the new officer’s salary for three years. City police are still seeking another officer to hire with funds from the COPS grant.

   Joshua’s hometown is Knox, IN, and he graduated from Knox High School as well as the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in Plainfield, IN. He is married.

   He served for three years with the Starke County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy sheriff before joining LaPorte police.

   He reported for duty in LaPorte on Tuesday, March 16.
