The cost to provide security for the annual LaPorte Jaycees Fourth of July Parade put the traditional event in jeopardy due to budget constraints, so LaPorte County Sheriff Mike Mollenhauer, LaPorte Mayor Kathy Chroback, LaPorte City Police Chief Terry Scherer and the Jaycees have joined forces to find a solution.
“In the state of our economy, the city, the Jaycees and local businesses simply don’t have the money to fund the parade as in the past,” Mollenhauer said in a press release. “To help with the costs to put on the parade, I’ve made arrangements with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Reserve Program, Lake Patrol, Sheriff’s Posse and members of the Sheriff’s Office and LaPorte City Police Department’s administrative staff for officers to work the event on a voluntary basis without cost to the parade budget.
“Enough officers have offered their services to provide adequate security and traffic control for the event.”
Because of the officers’ volunteer efforts, the parade is expected to take place.

Thankyou to all those who have volunteered their services so that the parade can take place. It would not be the 4th of July without a parade in LaPorte. Thankyou, again.

Thank you to all the officers willing to volunteer their time. Given the cuts that city employees, including the officers, have had to undergo recently, it is admirable for them to continue supporting the community in this manner.
