The LaPorte Civic Auditorium. (www.laportecivic auditorium.com)

The Civic Auditorium has been a staple in our community for 80 years. We are upset that the city has to close such a major landmark building from operating on a daily basis.

This fine building holds so many memories for all LaPorte citizens and was built for that reason — for the community to utilize and enjoy.

We are the ceramics instructors who have been working in the ceramics room on the lower level of the Civic for many, many years. We love our jobs and we love the people we meet on a daily basis. Our program and the arts and crafts program has been in existence in the same room for at least 50 years. These classes are more than ceramics classes; they are a meeting place, a place for therapy, a place to create and make gifts for loved ones, a place to make lasting lifelong friendships, a place to be awarded for your creativeness, and a place for newcomers to our city to socialize. It may be just a ceramics class to some, but to so many it is so much more. We are like family, and it’s such a shame to close a gift like this.

The parks and the recreational programs are a vital part of what makes our community unique and a beautiful place to live, grow and raise our famlies. Because this is being taken away from us, it is so important to resolve the issues and reinstate the programs that are being cut.

We consider our jobs working for the city of LaPorte a privilege and we would love to see our program, among others, continue and not be cut.

   Thank you –
