It has been said that it takes a community to raise a child; equally, it takes numerous groups to protect and save the many fabulous structures here in LaPorte.
As we move into National Historic Preservation Month (May), People Engaged in Preservation would like to thank our partners in preservation who have made it possible for us to get the ball rolling in saving our first purchase (1008 Michigan Ave.) from an uncertain future. Those to thank are: Indiana Landmarks for giving us the financial backing to acquire the property, the LaPorte Historic Preservation Commission for approving the designation as a historic site, and the LaPorte City Council for enacting the ordinance designating 1008 Michigan Ave. as a single-site historic district.
At the same time, I would also like to thank the LaPorte Historic Preservation Commission for allowing PEP to participate in the letter writing campaign to inform all of the 98 “Outstanding” house owners in the LaPorte County Interim Report that they have a very special piece of property. Also that the commission and PEP are here for them if they wish to have their property designated as a historic site.
Finally, if you notice “Celebrate Historic LaPorte” signs popping up like spring flowers, it is because PEP has been putting them up in honor of Historic Preservation Month.
