After checking the required registrations of 177 area violent and sex offenders, local police have apprehended eight of nine who were non-compliant.
The sweep was announced in a press release Thursday, July 29, 2010, from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department.
On May 13, the U.S. Marshal’s Service, the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, the LaPorte and Michigan City Police departments, Indiana Department of Correction parole officers, and LaPorte Circuit Court probation officers participated in the countywide sweep. The 177 registered sex and violent offenders were checked at their registered residential addresses and places of employment.
A total of 168 registrants were found to be compliant; nine were found to be non-compliant. Eight of those nine had been apprehended as of July 29.
“Most of those who were non-compliant were found to be no longer living at their registered address, or missing,” the press release stated. “Within several weeks of the compliance checks, warrants were tendered to the LaPorte County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office and eight have since been located and arrested.”
The one man police are still seeking is Michael Shoble, 30. He is being sought by the U.S. Marshal’s Service on a charge of Class C felony sex offender registry violation. He has a previous conviction for the same offense. He is a registered sex offender based on a conviction for Class C felony sexual misconduct with a minor.

“This recent compliance sweep is evidence that the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, with the resources of local and federal law enforcement, will continue to monitor these offenders to ensure that they remain in compliance with Indiana and federal law which govern their movements,” Sheriff Mike Mollenhauer said in the press release. “Although the sheriff’s office routinely checks these offenders on an annual or quarterly basis, we will continue to conduct these sweeps to track registered offenders. We also hope that these sweeps serve notice to all registered offenders that if they violate the terms of the registry, they will be charged.”
