It was Poochapalooza at Luhr County Park on Wednesday, Sept. 29, as its new no-leash dog park was dedicated. The one-acre facility is one of four dog parks throughout the county parks system now. In addition to Luhr County Park, there is a no-leash facility at Bluhm County Park (three acres), at Creek Ridge County Park (three and a quarter acre), and at the LaPorte County Small Animal Shelter.
The Luhr dog park was made possible by LaPorte County Prosecutor Robert Beckman’s infraction fund, which provided money for the facility from fees paid for speeding tickets issued in the county. Fencing, signage and dog boxes were purchased for Luhr Park.
Each dog park has self-registration permits located in the mailboxes at the facilities. There is a daily fee of $3 per day for each dog ($4 for out of county); or an annual fee of $25 for the first dog ($30 out of county) and $5 for each additional dog. The user fees help maintain the no-leash facilities.
