American Greyhound Great Lakes, a not-for-profit, 501c3 organization dedicated to finding good homes for retired racing greyhounds, is solely staffed by volunteers, many of whom live in LaPorte County.

The organization takes in greyhounds from various tracks in the U.S. that have been retired from their racing career and places them in foster homes while awaiting placement through adoption. The organization obtains all the initial veterinary care for the greyhounds when they are brought from the track, before placing them in foster homes. The foster families work with the dogs to get them accustomed to family life in a home.

Through community contacts, adoption drives, and attendance at several festivals and fairs, American Greyhound Great Lakes places dogs into permanent homes with their “forever families.” Its goal is to promote public awareness about what excellent, loving pets these noble dogs make. Many people are surprised to find that the average greyhound is very affectionate and loves to lie around while enjoying its retirement years. The organization is built upon the work of volunteers and donors who love to see these dogs placed into loving homes.

Additionally, American Greyhound Great Lakes works with the Second Chance at Life program, which allows prison inmates to work with some of the greyhounds, completing an intensive obedience training program. This gives both participants, the inmate and the dog, a chance to do something to improve the life of another.
