More than 300 runners and walkers braved temperatures in the 20s to compete in the eighth annual LaPorte YMCA Run/Walk on Saturday, March 26, 2011, at Soldiers Memorial Park. The event included both 10K and 5K races.

   John Arndt of New Carlisle captured the 10K run with a time of 34 minutes, 58.8 seconds. John Borman of Valparaiso (35:41.8) was second and Zach Spain of Hobart (35:43.2) was third. Jeff Mescal of Hebron (36:21.7) was the men’s Masters (40 and older) champion.

   Karen Nagel of Valparaiso (39:51.5) was the top female finisher and placed eighth overall. The women’s Masters winner was Michelle Didion of LaPorte (40:38.8).

   The top finisher in the 5K run was Franswa Hammonds of Michigan City (19:21.8). Doug Biernacki of LaPorte (20:19.9) took second and Scott Krause of South Bend (20:25.8) placed third. David Wort of LaPorte (22:12.7) was the men’s Masters champion.

   Michelle Taylor of South Bend (21:21.6) was the first woman to cross the finish line in the 5K and placed sixth overall. Michele Looney of LaPorte (24:30.2) was the women’s Masters champion.

   In the 10K run, 176 runners crossed the finish line, while 133 participants completed the 5K run. A total of 359 runners registered for the event, which is a Calumet Region Striders Gold Cup Series Race.
