The LaPorte County Park Department, Park Board and Park Foundation Board are honoring the memory of the late Don and Phyliss Benn, conservationists who supported the efforts “to preserve, protect and manage natural, cultural and recreational resources within a diverse and balanced park system,” in LaPorte County.
The park department will name Trail No. 3 at Bluhm Park after the Benns at a ceremony and dedication on Saturday, May 21, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Bluhm County Park, 3855 S. 1100 West, Westville.
Phyliss was a charter LaPorte County Park Foundation member and a former LaPorte City Park Board member. She died Feb. 7, 2011. Don was an editor and writer at The LaPorte Herald-Argus for more than 40 years, and a devoted environmentalist. He died July 13, 1998. Together they supported early efforts in the county to create and develop the county park system that we all enjoy today.
The public is invited to the dedication ceremony.

I’m honored to share the same name and feel a sense of moral obligation to support parks and open spaces in my own county (Montgomery County, PA.)
