On Saturday, May 21, 2011, a trail was dedicated in honor of the late Phyliss Benn at Bluhm County Park, Westville, and a memorial hike took place on the Phyliss Benn Trail at Wintergreen Woods in northern LaPorte County.
Phyliss, who died Feb. 7, 2011, was a member of many environmental organizations in LaPorte County and a charter county park foundation member. She was also a local attorney.
Her late husband and fellow environmentalist, Don, was also honored with a trail named for the couple at Bluhm. Don was an editor at The LaPorte Herald-Argus for more than 40 years.
Wintergreen Woods is located on County Road 925 North, 2 miles west of State Road 39 in LaPorte County. Visitors are welcome and can park along the road’s edge. Trail guides are available onsite or www.lpcct.org.
