Healthy crowds enjoyed food, music, exhibits and more on a crisp, sunny day in downtown LaPorte Saturday, Sept. 17, 2011. Perfect weather added to the annual LaPorte Sunflower Fair’s festivities. WNLP photographer Dennis Proud captured it all.

Always a great event to attend and be a part of. Thanks to the photographer for staying the the Crosslin’s Tae Kwon Do group though the whole demo.
I only wish there were more events like this for the businesses and community organizations in La Porte.
Back in 2006, the Library hosted an event in the large meeting room for the public to check out “New things” Several organizations showed off the activities they provided to the public including chocolate making, quilting, and martial arts. This was a very popular event, packed with attendees, and very interesting. I hope something like that could be like a mini-sunflower fair for the winter.
The Y also does things like that on occasion, but I feel the community needs to come together more to make those events bigger.
Overall, I love the Sunflower Fest. Like other things in La Porte (County Fair, Different Festivals, etc) I feel that more needs to be done to attract the teenage and young adult crowd. It seems there’s a lot for children and older adults. I’m not sure what could be done other than perhaps having some contemporary music bands playing throughout the street.
Can’t wait for next year!
