Jack PointonJack Lee Pointon, 74, of LaPorte, died Tuesday, Jan. 24, 2012, at 5:35 p.m. at IU Health LaPorte Hospital following an extended illness.

He was born Feb. 23, 1937, to Alta Mae Tidey in LaPorte.

Jack served his country honorably for over a decade in both the United States Army and later in the United States Air Force. He retired from Allis-Chalmers, LaPorte, in 1983 and later from House of Fara, LaPorte, in 2000. He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene and American Legion Post 83, both of LaPorte. Jack was an avid golfer and enjoyed woodworking and painting.

On May 25, 1959, he married Vella J. Mansfield at the Waterford Methodist Church in Michigan City, IN.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Vella J. Pointon of LaPorte; three children, William Allen (Laura) Pointon, Stephanie (Charles) Green and Carolyn Jean (Wayne) Wright, all of LaPorte; eight grandchildren, Candice, Eric, Dustin, Angelica, Brittney, DeAnne, Chi, and Charles; nine great-grandchildren; and 11 siblings, Wilma, Karen, Dorothy, Elaine, Eva, Merlyn, Rodger, Celeste, Vicky, Rick, and Kevin.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings, Judy, Randy and Allen.

A Celebration of Life service will be held in Jack’s Honor on Monday, Jan. 30, at 2 p.m. at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Service, LaPorte, with Rev. Dave Riffle officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday, Jan. 29, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Patton Cemetery, LaPorte, with military honors.
