A man was killed, his wife injured and their dog killed in a crash on Johnson Road Thursday afternoon, March 28, 2013. The man has been identified as David Riggs, 70, of Michigan City, and his wife is identified as Barbara Riggs, 68.

Information from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office:

“At approximately 1:01 pm, deputies from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office were summoned to the scene of a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Johnson Road and County Road 300 North in Center Township. Deputies discovered a passenger car and a garbage truck that had been involved in the crash.

“It was soon discovered that two people who had been in the passenger car, a Chevrolet Impala, were seriously injured. Due to the severity of their injuries, Med-Flight was summoned to the scene. Prior to the arrival of Med-Flight, a 70-year-old male passenger of the Impala was pronounced dead at the scene. The 68-year-old female driver was subsequently airlifted from the scene and flown to South Bend Memorial Hospital.” A golden retriever was also reportedly killed in the crash.

“There were three occupants in the garbage truck and they were not injured. Investigation at the scene has indicated that the Impala had been traveling east on County Road 300 North and failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of 300 North (and Johnson Road) and entered the intersection, colliding with the garbage truck that had been traveling north. The garbage truck is owned and operated by the Michigan City Sanitary District.”

Center and Coolspring township fire departments and LaPorte County EMS were also at the scene.

Johnson Road was closed for several hours after the crash and reopened Thursday evening.
