EDITOR’S NOTE: WNLP is proud to post the winning literary works in this year’s Christopher Iselman Writing Awards. The LaPorte High School English Department has awarded these honors since 1974. Christopher was a member of the LPHS Class of 1970. When he died during his senior year, his parents and teachers decided to honor his love of writing by establishing this contest. “The Wedding,” by LPHS student Maverick Blanton, is this year’s Best Short Story.
By Maverick Blanton

Downstairs, the guests were beginning to get very restless; no explanation had been offered for the delay. Not even the soothing sounds of fifty Frank Sinatras could keep the tension down.

Inside, Allison was on the verge of having her fourth breakdown of the day.

Author Maverick Blanton

“If they’re not down in three minutes I’m going to hold my breath until I die!” she cried, throwing her bouquet down.

“Promises, promises,” Michael said under his breath.

At that moment his mother and older sister came hurrying down the stairs, completely disheveled.

“You can’t go out there looking like that!” Allison cried, aghast.

“Like hell we can’t,” Mrs. George-Foreman snapped. “Where’s your father?”

“Right here,” Michael said, throwing him once more onto his shoulder.

The two women dashed for him.

“What are you doing?!” Allison screamed, throwing herself between them. “You two need to be out there right now!”

“We—just—need—the—” Victoria tried to push past her sister; however, Allison seemed to have gained near super-human strength, a deadly gift in her arsenal. At that exact moment, the Sinatra choir began singing a version of the Wedding March comprised entirely of “doo be doo be doos,” a song that almost seemed to give Allison a demonic sort of aura.

“Get. Out. There. Now,” she hissed, eyes wild. Suddenly intimidated, the two women dusted themselves off and sullenly made their ways into the audience.

Allison took another deep breath and put on a dazzling smile, the type normally seen in musicals or beauty pageants. Motioning for her brother to join her side, she linked her arm through her dead father’s and began to walk through the doors. “Let anyone know he’s dead,” she hissed at Michael, “and we’ll be planning your funeral before we start his.”

“Ally, let’s face it, he’s more expressive now than he was when he was living,” Michael shot back. By this time they were outside; the entire assembly had risen to watch them walk in.

Several people whispered about the state of Dr. Foreman; however, seeing as he looked just as uncoordinated as usual, no one suspected much. Michael and Allison continued to give their strained smiles, each hoping to whatever higher power would hear them that the old man’s corpse would not fall between them.

As the trio walked down the aisle, Great-Aunt Beatrice looked up from her wedding program to see her husband meet another woman and her father at the altar before her. “Will,” she whispered, heartbroken. Then the rage set in.

At the same moment, the breeze shifted aside Dr. Foreman’s coat pocket, and Victoria was given the perfect view of a long, white sheet of paper tucked away inside. “There it is!” she hissed to her mother.

Allison’s jaw felt like it was going to break as she finally reached the altar. Her fiancé, Rupert, gave her a reassuring grin; she completely ignored him and motioned for the priest to get rolling with the ceremony.

The man opened his Bible. “Dearly beloved,” he began, “we are gathered here today to …”

Allison felt her mind wander. Look how pretty everything is, she thought pleasantly. I’m so pretty. Everyone’s looking at me. I’m getting married, I’m a princess, look at me, look at me, look at me.

The priest droned on some more about the sanctity of the union.

This is getting boring. Get to the part where I talk.

He cleared his throat. “If there are any objections as to why these two should not wed, speak now, or forever hold your peace.”

Allison saw a brief flash of white; that was all the warning she got before she heard a frail old voice cry, “I object!”

Everyone in the audience gasped and turned to see Great-Aunt Beatrice standing in the middle of the aisle, finger raised as if summoning the powers of the heavens to her aid.

The priest blinked. Unsure of how to proceed, he cleared his throat again and asked, “Uh … really? Why?”

Beatrice drew herself to full height. “Because that man is my husband,” she announced dramatically.

Rupert jumped back as exclamations of horror rippled through the audience. “No, I’m not!” he yelled loudly, face pale.

Beatrice hobbled forward indignantly. “William Foreman, how dare you?” she hissed. “I’ve waited this whole war for you and …” She slowed down as she drew closer and got a better look at him. “Oh. You’re not Will, are you?”

“Of course I’m not Will! Who the hell’s that?”

Beatrice looked back at the audience, confused. Her wandering eyes fell on Michael, who had been trying to hide his face behind his program. “There you are, honey!” Her eyes then fell on Dr. Foreman’s body, which was slumped rather unconvincingly next to his son. “And you must be Francis! Why, you’re looking better already!” She leaned forward with an outstretched hand. “So pleased to meet you, I’m Beatrice, Willy’s wife.” With that, she took up his cold hand in hers and gave it a firm shake.

Then the breeze picked up.

This, combined with the movement from the shaking limbs, served to knock the paper free from Dr. Foreman’s suit coat. Confused, the old woman bent down to pick it up. She barely had the chance to read “LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF—” before a combined force of Mrs. George-Foreman and Victoria plowed into her so hard that the poor woman was sent sailing back into the priest.

There was a huge confusion, with several guests screaming, fifty Sinatras still obliviously crooning, Beatrice and the priest moaning, and Allison pulling out clumps of her hair in the background. Despite all this, Victoria still managed to wrench the will out of her great-aunt’s birdlike hands and devour it in front of the entire congregation.

“Hahahaha,” she roared in front of everyone, now looking at her as if she were some sort of dangerous animal at the zoo. “It’s all ours! The money’s all ours!”

“What are you talking about?!” Allison screamed, running at her. The keen observer would have noticed that she was foaming slightly at the mouth. “You’ve ruined my wedding, you sanctimonious b—”

“EVERYONE, SHUT UP!” Mrs. George-Foreman yelled. She leapt to her feet with surprising agility for a woman of her age and stature. “I’m calling the lawyer!” Victoria climbed to her feet as well and stood hunched behind her mother.

“Hello, this is Annette George-Foreman speaking,” Mrs. George-Foreman said gleefully. “I was wondering if I could speak with Mr. Nevilles?” There was a slight pause. “What do you mean he’s left? What do you mean, he said he’s not coming back? What do you mean, he left for South Africa an hour ago on his private jet? WHAT DO YOU MEAN, HE LEFT US A NOTE SAYING ‘THANKS FOR THE INHERITANCE, SUCKERS’? WHAT DO YOU MEAN—”

Mrs. George-Foreman looked up in rage. “That skank just hung up on me!”

Victoria, meanwhile, had gotten quite pale. “Mother,” she said quickly, “what’s the matter?”

Mrs. George-Foreman threw her phone to the ground, furious. “THAT THIEVING SCUMBAG OF A LAWYER STOLE ALL OUR MONEY!”

Victoria grabbed her mother by the shoulders. “What does that mean?”

“It means we’re broke! It means all of Daddy’s money is gone! It means I might have to work!”

“Wait a minute,” someone from the audience said.

The family turned around to stare at him.

“What’s all this talk about inheritance? Is there something wrong with Dr. Foreman?”

“Oh, right. Everyone, he’s dead,” Mrs. George-Foreman said dismissively.

There was a collective silence. For an incredibly awkward moment, the family and the guests stared each other down, as if daring the other side to speak first. Finally, the crowd began to back away slowly, as if afraid the craziness was contagious.

“Well, that ended well,” Michael said dryly.

The surviving members of his family had no energy left to give anything, other than a few feeble “Shut up, Michael”s.

Suddenly, Michael began to laugh — a deep-throated, belly laugh completely inappropriate for the situation they found themselves in.

“What are you laughing about now?” Victoria’s voice had lost all inflection.

“Nothing,” he said, wiping a tear from his eye. “It’s just, if this is how the wedding went, I can’t WAIT to see the funeral!”

There was a slight pause as the George-Foreman women all strongly considered killing him. However, ultimately deciding that they’d had enough death for one day, they linked arms with him and walked toward the house, ready to start a new chapter in their lives.

To read Part 1, click on the following link:

http://www.whatsnewlaporte.com/2012/05/15/the-wedding-part-1/

By Maverick Blanton

Mrs. George-Foreman looked around conspiratorially. “Look, we need the will right away because … well, because your father didn’t exactly leave us anything in it.”

“WHAT?!”

Author Maverick Blanton

“Shut up!” Mrs. George-Foreman spun around, as if certain someone had snuck through the walls to spy on their conversation. “He didn’t, all right? He left us nothing and gave it to that nutcase Beatrice. That’s why we need the will right away. To destroy it.” She looked up to see her daughter frozen solid. Evidently the idea that she might end up poor had shocked her so badly that she had momentarily forgotten all her motor skills. Her mother responded by splashing yet another bottle of brandy in her face.

“AAAAAAAAAAAAH!” her daughter screamed, a sound of terror that should have been reserved for when she found her father’s dead body. “WE NEED TO GET THAT WILL RIGHT AWAY!”

“Then call the lawyer!” Mrs. George-Foreman snarled, looking angrily at the now half-empty bottle of booze. It was getting harder and harder to keep good booze in that house.

Victoria nodded and quickly dialed the appropriate number. “Hello, Mr. Nevilles?” she said sweetly, putting on her best ‘rich girl’ voice. “Hi, this is Victoria George-Foreman. We’ve got a slight situation on our hands …”

The lawyer sighed. “Whose house has your mother crashed her car into this time?”

“Unfortunately, no one’s. This is a bit more serious.”

There was a sympathetic “tsk”ing from the other end. “Your father kill someone mid-surgery again?”

“What? No, no!” Victoria cleared her throat. “In fact, one could almost say the exact opposite … you see … well, Daddy’s dead.”

Shocked silence. “Beg pardon?”

“I know, I know, it’s all very surprising and tragic,” Victoria said. “Believe me, I’m horribly traumatized from the whole experience. I probably will never be the same again.” She let that sentence hang out in the open for a few seconds to increase the dramatic effect. “But anyways, Mother needs to see Daddy’s will ASAP.”

Mr. Nevilles coughed very loudly, obviously extremely shaken. “Yes, yes, of course … the will … let’s see … the will, the will, the will … where is the will …”

Victoria frowned. “You do know where the will is, don’t you?”

“Yes, yes, of course I do …” There was a long silence, and for an instant Victoria had a glorious vision of being totally in the clear. Unfortunately, a few seconds later the lawyer cleared his throat and said, “Ah, yes, how silly of me. I forgot. Your father kept all copies of the will in your house.”

“In our house?” Victoria said sharply; her mother looked up at her from the brandy glass. “You mean Daddy’s will is somewhere in here?”

“That’s the idea, isn’t it?” There was some more coughing from the other end. “Unfortunately, I’m not sure where in your house the will is; he never really trusted me with that information.”

“Yeah, I’ll bet he didn’t,” Victoria murmured, scanning the room wildly with her eyes.

“What was that?”

“Nothing,” she said quickly. “Well, thank you, Mr. Nevilles. We’ll call you the instant we find it, OK? Goodbye.” She ended the call and glanced sharply at her mother. “It’s in the house somewhere.”

Mrs. George-Foreman did her own quick scan of the room. “Any idea where?”

“None,” her daughter replied grimly. “How much time do we have until the ceremony starts?”

Mrs. George-Foreman looked her watch. “45 minutes.” The two women stared at each other for a moment. Then, like clockwork, they began a mad search of the study, tearing apart cushions in an effort to find the wealth that was now all theirs.

Meanwhile, Michael was staring at his father’s corpse, which was sprawled out on the bed that it had occupied when in life.

This is the most disgusting thing I’ve ever had to do, he thought darkly, and I’ve dated a Kardashian sister.

Suppressing his revulsion, he stooped down and threw his father’s arm over his shoulder, staggering under the body’s weight. “You better have left me a ton of money,” Michael growled through clenched teeth, making his way through the bedroom door and down the hallway. The dead man’s feet dragged on the floor, catching on the carpet and nearly sending his son sprawling. “And the house in Jamaica. A ton of money and the house in Jamaica.” He then had the misfortune of catching a whiff of his father’s body odor. “Oh, God. And the yacht. Definitely the yacht.”

Michael staggered down the corridor until finally reaching the top of the stairs. He tried to take a step forward; however, his father’s weight nearly sent him careening over the edge. Sweating rather heavily at this point, Michael set his father down and leaned against the wall to catch his breath. “You really should have exercised more, Dad,” he wheezed, running his hand through his hair. “Now, how am I going to get you downstairs …” After a moment’s reflection, Michael shrugged his shoulders and grabbed his father’s feet, dragging him. As the corpse hit the steps, its head began to bounce, making a sound so sickening Michael thought he was going to vomit.

“No!” he snarled, fighting the nausea. “I paid too much for this tuxedo to get it any more disgusting than it already is!” Determined to make it through, he picked up his speed. Halfway down, however, an ancient voice stopped him dead in his tracks.

“William, is that you?”

Michael spun around to see a tiny old woman with an enormous head of white hair peering up at him expectantly.

“Great-Aunt Beatrice,” he said hurriedly, trying to block her view of his father. “It’s so nice to see you.”

His aunt smiled at him with tears in her eyes. “Oh, Will, where have you been all these years? I thought you’d never come back!”

Michael’s smile became, if possible, even more strained. “Aunt Beatrice, it’s me, Michael. Uncle William died in World War II.”

The woman shook her head. “No, no, Will, you’re right here. I’m so glad you’ve come back!” A sly look crept into her eyes. “I hope you’re still interested in me, after spending all that time with those French girls …”

“Wow,” Michael said. “Today really did just get worse.”

His aunt had stopped paying attention to him. “Who’s that you’re dragging, Will?”

Michael panicked. “That’s … that’s um …. that’s …” Inspiration hit him. “That’s … my buddy Francis. He’s been badly injured, Beatrice. I need to get him to a doctor right away.”

The old woman’s eyes grew very wide. “Is he going to die, Willy?”

“Oh, just maybe,” Michael said a bit wildly. “Beatrice, I —”

“Call me BeeBee, baby.”

“Er … all right … BeeBee, be a doll and just go out back, okay? I’ll be with you before you’ll even know I’m gone.”

“I’ll be waiting, Will,” she said lovingly. Blowing him a kiss, she began to make her feeble way to the backyard.

Michael watched her go and promptly started gagging. “At least you died before you got like her,” he huffed as he hoisted his father once more onto his shoulder. “Gotta appreciate the small things in life.”

Allison was already waiting for him in front of the garden doors. “He’s got dirt all over him,” she said in dismay, pointing at him with her bouquet.

“Somehow I don’t think that matters at this point.” Michael took his father’s handkerchief and mopped his face. “Where are Mom and Vicky?”

“I don’t know,” Allison said tensely. “They better not be late after all this trouble …”

There was a loud BANG from upstairs, followed by a cry of pain.

Allison closed her eyes and took a deep breath. “I swear, if anyone else dies today …”

“Better keep an eye out for Aunt Beatrice,” Michael muttered. “Esperanza, please go and make sure my mother and sister haven’t suddenly decided to keep my father company.”

The maid shot him a dirty look. “Working for this family is like working in a zoo.”

“Try being a member.” Michael plopped down in an armchair. “While you’re at it, get me some of that brandy as well.”

Esperanza mounted the stairs and began looking down the hallway. “Senora?” she called, peeking into one of the bedrooms. “Senorita Victoria? Where are you? I hope that you are not dead …” She peered into Dr. Foreman’s office. “Ay, Dios mio, que hacen?!”

Mrs. George-Foreman and her daughter lay spread-eagle on the office floor, the contents of a massive oak bookshelf scattered around them. The bookshelf in question lay flat between them.

The maid crossed her arms. “I am not cleaning this up.”

“Oh, no one asked you,” Mrs. George-Foreman gasped. “Vicky, did you find anything?”

“Nope,” Victoria said a little dazedly. “But then again I got a little distracted at the end there …”

“Senora,” Esperanza said quickly, “your daughter is getting married in twenty-five minutes!”

“Mother, give it up,” Victoria panted. “We’ll have to look for it later.”

Mrs. George-Foreman shook her head. “We can’t give up … won’t give my money to Beatrice …”

Victoria coughed loudly. “But we’ve looked everywhere!” she said desperately. “I don’t know where else it’d be!”

“Well, where would Daddy keep something that precious to him? Something that he would want to know where it was at all times?”

Esperanza cleared her throat. “Perdon, Senora, but are you looking for something?”

Mrs. George-Foreman shot her maid a death glare. “No, Esperanza. I just decided to rearrange my study thirty minutes before my daughter’s wedding.”

“Mother, maybe she can help us,” Victoria said desperately. “Esperanza, we’re looking for my father’s will.”

The maid frowned. “A will?”

Victoria sighed impatiently. “You know…a will-o …”

“You are looking for a tree?”

“No, no!” Victoria slammed her hand to the floor in frustration; it happened to slam onto a Spanish-English dictionary. “Ah! One second. We are looking for my father’s … testamento?”

Esperanza’s face lit up. “OH! The will?”

“YES!” The two women leapt to their feet in excitement.

“I do not know where it is,” the maid said sadly.

“Oh.” They both sat back down.

“However,” she continued, “I did see Senor Foreman put a very large piece of paper into his coat pocket this morning. Perhaps that is it?”

Mrs. George-Foreman furrowed her eyebrows. “Well, wait, that would mean …” Her eyes grew wide with horror. “Oh, no …”
