Family fun at downtown LaPorte’s Sunflower Fair Sept. 18

   The downtown LaPorte Sunflower Fair will offer activities for family members of all ages on Saturday, Sept. 18.

   Activities will include:

   — The annual Red Cross 5K run/walk

   — A classic car show

   — Food vendors

   — Kiddie rides

   — An open house at the LaPorte City Police Department

   — The Artists Wall at Rumely Historic Apartments

   — A rib cookoff

   — Craft booths

   — Live entertainment

   — YMCA activities

   — A farmers market

   — A library book sale and family events

   — Sunflower contests

   — Activities at New Church

Michiana Resources’ Creative Concepts Gallery reception is Sept. 17

   Michiana Resources Inc. will celebrate the second anniversary of its Creative Concepts art gallery and studio on Friday, Sept. 17, 2010, with a reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Dale E. Landsman Art Foundation.

   The Creative Concepts Gallery is housed in the Michiana Resources facility at 4315 East Michigan Blvd., Michigan City. Light refreshments will be served.

   The public is invited to stop in to view the art created by Creative Concepts artists and tour the gallery and art studio. New this year is a wide selection of glass art work also made by Creative Concepts program participants, and fired in a glass kiln made possible by the Unity Foundation of LaPorte County. These beautiful, one-of-a-kind pieces include jewelry, coasters, cheese trays and more. All art will be available for purchase.

   The gallery places primary focus on the outstanding artwork of local citizens with disabilities. The gallery was made possible by the volunteer efforts of the carpenters, electricians, and painters and finishers apprenticeship programs of northwest Indiana. The project was managed by Tonn and Blank Construction and Joe Coar, vice president. Generous donations from supporters including Current Electric and Dale E. Landsman were critical to the completion of the project.

   The gallery is open to the public during business hours. More than 100 participants have had the opportunity to see their outstanding work exhibited in the formal gallery environment. Other items made by the Creative concepts artists are available for purchase in the gallery gift shop.

   Michiana Resources Inc. is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization that has been providing independence building services for area citizens with disabilities since 1970. Michiana offers a variety of services that are provided at its facilities at 4315 East Michigan Blvd. and 1800 S. Woodland in Michigan City, as well as in other community-based settings. Michiana is accredited by CARF, the international accrediting body for organizations serving people with disabilities.

New books at library, week of Sept. 6

   Here are books fresh on the shelves at LaPorte County Public Library as of the week of Sept. 6:

Nonfiction

   “Ah-Choo!” by Jennifer Ackerman (616.205). Find out what, exactly, a cold is, how it works, and whether it’s really possible to “fight one off.”

   “Choosing to See” by Mary Beth Chapman (B Chapman). God gives the author a famous husband, but then she has to struggle with the question of where is God when things fall apart.

   “Jane Addams” by Louise W. Knight (B Addams). Born to a wealthy family in small-town Illinois 150 years ago, Jane Addams emerges unexpectedly as an iconoclast and a rebel.

   “Leonard Maltin’s 2011 Movie Guide” (791.43). Over 17,000 capsule movie reviews include performers, ratings and running times, plus 10 must-see movie lists such as movies too good to miss, fathers worth celebrating, mothers worth remembering, and family films of a different kind.

Children’s nonfiction

   “Book Making and Paper Making: Be Your Own Publisher” by Deborah Hufford. Learn how to make your own fancy paper! You can also decorate the cover of a journal, add a ribbon closure, or make your own miniature book.

   “Clay So Cute!” by Sherri Haab. This book shows how one of the easiest mediums — polymer clay — can be sculpted into quick, simple, totally fun jewelry and accessories for ‘tween girls. Try your hand at bangles, pocket mirrors, earrings, chunky bead necklaces, and cute charms.

   “Get Real” by Mara Rockliff. Make smart decisions with your money with this eye-opening book that explains in kid-speak how the things you buy determine the world you build. Everything you own came from somewhere, and cheap goods in particular often come with a high price in the form of worker cruelty and environmental damage.

   “Treasure” by Philip Steele. Pore over pages upon pages of eye-popping precious pieces. Jewels, coins, and rare items from the tombs of royalty are photographed and displayed in stunning detail in this Eyewitness book.
