A local review on Toast.ed: Everything should be right on Toast

At Toast.ed on Gumpendorfer Straße you can get exactly that: toasts in many variations. If there's room for improvement on the salty side, and you're into sweet stuff, this is the place for you.

It's usually a good idea for a restaurant to specialize in one thing. At the new Toast.ed – a very small, very clean new cafe just below Amonstiege in Vienna Mariahilf – it's, surprise: Toast. So basically anything that fits between two slices of bread. So promising, because something as simple as a toasted sandwich can take you to heaven. As always with simple dishes, everything should be perfect.

Toast.ed has over a dozen different versions with or without eggs, vegetarian or meat. Chicken curry, for example, eggs with hummus and rocket or falafel. However, there is still a lot of room for improvement in implementation. The beef toast on brioche (€8.80) is kind of a grilled burger and it's pretty okay. Pelicious (pea pesto, walnuts, rocket, butter, cheese, 7.80 euros) is disappointing with peas that look suspiciously like cans and unfortunately taste like them: it's a shame, the combination was really good!

There's still potential for bread, but maybe I'm a Joseph bread-jummy-cheese snob. For example, the grilled cheese sandwich at Cafe Kriemhild behind the town hall is really good…

But back to Gumpendorfer Straße. Anyone with a sweet tooth is in good hands here. Not just croquettes (for those not up to date on Instagram: it's a hybrid between a croissant and a cookie, said to have been invented in a Parisian boulangerie), but also seven different French toasts, from tiramisu. A kind of yeast dumpling for oriental seduction, and cannot be saved in portion size or sugar. French toast with speculoos with mascarpone cream, caramel cookies, caramel sauce and caramelized banana comes on a big plate: you don't have to fear a sugar shock.
