In the first quarter, 87% of public electricity was renewable

The share of renewable electricity generation in the public electricity supply rose to 86.5 percent in the first quarter – with significant increases in hydropower, wind and PV – and Austria is becoming an electricity exporter despite the winter months.

Austria is on track to reach its goal of 100 percent electricity from renewables by 2030. This is shown by figures from the European Transmission System Operators Association (ENTSO-E) for the first quarter of 2024: solar, wind and hydro make up 86.5 percent of Austria's net public electricity supply. In recent years, the ratio has been 50 to 60 percent in the comparable period.

“In 2021, for the first time, we decided on a 100 percent green electricity target. Today it is within reach. The green electricity figures of the first quarter prove that. We will succeed in producing green electricity – replacing Russian natural gas. By 2030, this changes. And this is good because of our cheap domestic energy. makes us independent, strengthens the industrial base and gets more jobs,” he says. Climate Protection Minister Leonor Küssler.

A trend reversal is announced

The winter months are typically characterized by higher demand for imports and a higher proportion of fossil fuels than later in the year. By the first quarter of 2023, one-fifth of the required electricity had to be imported. This year, Austria switched from an importer to an exporter of electricity, thanks to increased production from renewables. The Ministry of Climate Protection's aggressive work to expand renewable energies is paying off; The energy transition is well under way.

Hydropower contributed the most electricity at 7,336 gigawatt hours (GWh) or 48.1 percent of net public electricity generation (33.8 percent in the first quarter of 2023). Wind power also increased by 25 percent to 3,224 GWh (Q1 2023: 2,573 GWh). The share of photovoltaics in total net electricity generation has quadrupled (730 GWh in the first quarter of 2024, 177 GWh in the first quarter of 2023). The numbers are from ENTSO-E and are below Energy charts Available.
