Partial results: Second round of presidential election in Slovakia

According to preliminary results, a second round of presidential elections will be held in Slovakia. According to partial results released shortly before midnight, populist parliament speaker Peter Pellegrini will face off against liberal diplomat Ivan Gorko. The second phase of the election will be held on April 6.

According to partial results published by the Statistics Office, Pellegrini won 40.4 percent of the vote in the first round of voting, while Gorkoc received 36.9 percent. Both were clearly ahead of all other candidates and now face each other in a runoff election. According to Slovak electoral law, this is necessary if no candidate receives an absolute majority.

Selection of the direction of Slovakia

Pellegrini is an ally of Russia-friendly Prime Minister Robert Fico, who denies Ukraine military aid to defend itself against Russia. The 48-year-old has, among other things, questioned Ukraine's sovereignty and called on Kiev to make peace with Russia.

On the other hand, former foreign minister Gorkoc, a staunch supporter of Ukraine and with views similar to outgoing president Zuzana Caputova, is not running for a second term. Opposition parties in the country are supporting him.
