The 28-year-old managed to hold back her emotions as she accepted the congratulations of her long-time rival Petra Volhova at Salzburg Land, but minutes later the American finally erupted.
“Those were very challenging days,” Shiffrin said through tears and a broken voice. Two days earlier, she had sat at the bedside of her friend, Alexander Amoud Gilde, in Bern, who had suffered a severe fall after which she was “really mad”. But despite all the worries and “little sleep”, the seven-time world champion won the long-running battle with Valhova by 0.27 seconds.
Shiffrin was emotional after her victory in Flachau
“It's very emotional at the moment. Seeing the love of your life hitting the net at 120 km/h straightaway doesn't give you a good feeling,” Shiffrin explained of his feelings. Before she finished her media marathon, the American phoned Gilday to wish her a good night.
The Norwegian suffered a serious fall in the descent in Wengen on Saturday and later had to be airlifted to hospital. Gilday underwent surgery the same day in Bern, and Shiffrin immediately flew to Switzerland to support his friend. The speed queen returned to Austria only on Sunday evening.
Despite the conditions, it was not easy, and Shiffrin celebrated his fifth victory in the night slalom in Flachau. For Americans, it was a continuation of the sentimental days of the past. (kk/dpa)
