In Austria in particular, people like to add salt to their food – but this increases the risk of diseases such as stomach cancer (Image: Istock via Getty Images).

An interesting result of a health study: frequent addition of salt increases the risk of stomach cancer.

Health is the salt in the soup of our lives – but you shouldn’t add too much salt! This is the result of a long-term study by Meduni Vienna, which analyzed data from more than 470,000 adults. This revealed what was already known in Asian countries where foods high in salt are not very popular: high consumption of this spice increases the risk of stomach cancer!

In fifth place

The study found that those who said they always or often added salt to their diet were 39 percent more likely to develop stomach cancer over an eleven-year follow-up period than those who rarely or rarely added a pinch. This type of tumor is the fifth most common worldwide: the elderly are still at risk, but recent data show a worrying increase in people under 50. Causes include alcohol, tobacco and obesity.
