Two accidents – three deaths

Chronicle

Three deaths occurred within minutes in two accidents a few kilometers apart in eastern Styria on Easter Monday: in Ilz, a couple was killed when a tree fell on their car while driving, and in Breitenfeld an der Rittschein, a 59-year-old crashed into a tree.

A couple from the Hartberg-Fürstenfeld district – aged 80 and 84 – were traveling on the L 404 from Großhartmannsdorf towards Ilz at around 2pm when a tree standing near the road fell and crashed due to sudden strong winds. The moving car of two pensioners fell. A tree trunk and the car were thrown off the road and the car finally came to rest in a forest.

An 80-year-old man and his 84-year-old wife may have died on the spot – only an emergency doctor could determine that the two East Styrians were dead.

The car hit a tree

15 minutes later, about ten kilometers away, a 59-year-old man was killed in another accident: while driving his car on the East Styrian L442 from Socha towards St. Kind, for unknown reasons, he left the road. The car veered off the road and hit a tree, trapping the man inside the vehicle.

A road user who followed a short time later informed the emergency services, and a passing medic also administered first aid shortly after – but neither the first aiders nor the Red Cross or the emergency doctor could help the 59-year-old who was seriously injured and died at the scene. In both cases, the relatives of those who died in the accident are cared for by the Crisis Intervention Team.
